At the heart of my identity as a designer is tinkering. Since I’ve been young, I have always been dissecting products, analysing components and learning how they function. Often product design is easy to overlook as it is deeply ingrained in everything we interact with, however what excites me is imagining the chain of purposeful decisions taken in order to shape all electronics, tools, consumables, clothing, furniture and infrastructure which we rely on. Tinkering has been my tool to decrypt these design decisions and peer deeper into the workings of every gadget I can get a hold of, developing a practical understanding of technology, mechanical design, and manufacturing methods throughout the process. These are the experiences I aim to share through my own work, by encouraging the art of tinkering through modular and customizable products.
Predominantly I am a technical designer, my interests lie in utilizing my technical understanding and skills to find creative solutions to challenges. My skills in CAD, animation, 3D printing, electronics and coding allow me the ability to realize the functionality and aesthetics of my ideas as I envision them. Most important of all however Is that I never stop learning new tools to incorporate into my workflow. My development of stitching, sewing and embroidery through my current work in Project 3 highlights my persistent dedication to mastering new fabrication methods. Although my main interests are in the ‘technology & realization’ and ‘math, data & computing’ expertise areas, I also place a focus on the visual appeal, user interaction, and branding of my designs.
I always approach the design process with a playful attitude, staying curious and open to all ideas is when I can best create captivating ideas and concepts. This is also the approach I bring to group work, comfortably taking a lead in projects by making an effort to understand, learn from and collaborate with everyone. In every project I take on I am dedicated to creating professional products which exceed expectations, defined by a creative, useful, and fun design philosophy.
Vision:
I love creating, and I believe everyone else should too. I envision a future where design is intuitive, approachable, and accessible to all. Our fashion, technology, tools, and media are extensions of our individuality and should authentically reflect who we are. Yet today, most consumers rely on the same mass-produced products as everyone else, limiting their functionality, appeal, and opportunity for personal expression. My aim is to make with purposeful disassembly, customizability and repairability in mind to create products which extend the design process beyond myself and give the user control. Personal fabrication technologies which are already being widely used such as 3D printing and other maker tools, could allow many people to produce or repair their own household appliances, furniture, clothing and even electronics, Eliminating a heavy reliance on large-scale production. Furthermore, emerging tools like artificial intelligence could play an important role in rapid and versatile customisability in self-manufacturing making it possible for both designers and non-designers to realise their ideas more efficiently. As opposed to fast-fashion trends in generalized manufacturing, Personalized fabrication has the potential to reduce overproduction and its associated environmental impacts, while simultaneously delivering users a unique, tailored, and expressive end product which they actively took a part in creating. By using local materials and producing only what is needed, we can establish a more sustainable, decentralized, and hyper-customized production framework—one that supports both customisation and environmental responsibility. This framework is one which I have applied throughout my professional work by creating customizable projects, which are intended to be manipulated, such as my project 2 LUC- a modular home assistant and companion tool which can easily be expanded to match personal needs. I aim to build on this vision, allowing the consumers themselves to create and crafting products not just for every designer but for the designer in everyone.
