Identity & Vision

This page describes my professional identity and vision as a designer

Identity

What motivates me, is viewing the world through the lens of design, understanding the thought and effort put into the every-day objects that we are all constantly interacting with. I chose to peruse design as a means to shape these same interactions through my own ideas and designs.

As a designer, I strive to be open-minded and inquisitive, always making a conscious effort to base my design decisions in a thorough and evidence driven understanding of users’ needs and behaviour. Connecting and empathizing with users is something I find important both from a ‘user & society’, and ‘business & entrepreneurship’ point of view, when thinking about the use and interactions of my designs.

I always aim to produce creative and original solutions in my designs, which forces me to broaden my expertise in new fields. One way I enjoy learning is through collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams, learning from people who have expertise in areas I may not be familiar with. Within teams, I’m comfortable taking on a variety of roles like research, facilitating product development, and managing projects. Most of all however, I view myself as a predominantly technical designer. My main interests lie in using my technical understanding and skills to find solutions to complex problems and challenges. As such, I am deeply passionate about employing technology in a creative manner in my designs, to create truly useful and functional products. I am also constantly seeking to learn about new and emerging technologies, such as AI, to elevate my designs to the next level. Furthermore, I enjoy being very hands on and experimental when ideating and developing designs, with a focus on the ‘technology & realization’ and ‘Math, Data & Computing’ expertise areas.

One of my strengths is being able to quickly adapt in response to hurdles and challenges I may face throughout a design process. I believe this makes me a versatile designer who can adapt to new situations quickly through an understanding of a range of interdisciplinary skills.

Vision

I envision a future in which the process of designing is open and accessible to anyone.

The items, brands, and trends that we choose to consume and associate ourselves with, play a massive role in the expression of our values and beliefs. Fashion, technology, food, and media all work to define ourselves as individuals. Therefore, why be bound to consuming the same mass manufactured designs and products as everyone else, rather than creating unique, personalized, and expressive products.

Emerging technologies which are already being widely used such as 3D printing could allow many people to produce their own household appliances, furniture, clothing and even electronics, Eliminating such a heavy reliance on large-scale production. Furthermore, new tools like artificial intelligence could play an important role in rapid and versatile customisability in self-manufacturing making it possible for non-designers to realise their ideas.

Personalized manufacturing has the advantages of reducing over-production and the environmentally negative effects of fast-fashion related trends, while simultaneously providing users with a more unique, tailored and expressive end product, which they were a part of creating.

Through my designs, I envision creating products which allow the consumers themselves to create. By using local materials and resources, and by producing only items that individuals themselves personally need, a more sustainable and hyper-customised production framework can be set-up.
